Responding to Typhoon Washi

During the weekend, Typhoon Washi made landfall in the Philippines leaving behind a trail of devastation and affecting thousands of people.  The typhoon was followed by flash floods which have severely impacted coastal communities in the North.

According to initial estimates, more than 500 people have died, more than 300 are still missing and 135,000 are affected over all. Up to 50,000 people are estimated to be living in shelters.  In addition, there is massive damage to infrastructure, homes and agriculture. Initial estimates indicate that immediate needs include food, water, non-food items and lights.

The Philippines Red Cross has responded immediately to this disaster. Over 600 trained volunteers and staff are working around the clock providing emergency first aid, distributing much-needed basic supplies and other support. The Canadian Red Cross is on stand-by with both supplies and personnel which can be quickly deployed if requested.
